Ebook About Bane, the man destined to one day destroying the Batman has his sights set on taking over Gotham City! The event that changed Batman's world forever kicks off with this new volume, including never before collected material in BATMAN: PRELUDE TO KNIGHTFALL. Bane has spent a lifetime on the South American island of Santa Prisca. The time he spent as the toughest inmate in their worst prison led him to develop berserk strength, savage intellect, and unparalleled megalomania. In Gotham City, Batman begins to feel he has lost his edge as he is forced to deal, in rapid succession, with the returning villain Black Mask and his gang a crazed killer called Metalhead, and a sharpshooter assassin hired by an imprisoned mobster to murder Commissioner Gordon.Part of a massive 25th anniversary re-cut of the entire BATMAN: KNIGHTFALL saga, this graphic novel, collects BATMAN: VENGEANCE OF BANE #1, BATMAN #484-491, DETECTIVE COMICS #654-658.Book Batman: Prelude to Knightfall (Batman: Knightfall) Review :
I'm pretty new to reading comics, but I've decided to start with Batman. Generally, I'm following the chronological outline provided by Wikipedia under the "Modern Batman" heading; in that capacity, I read Year One, some of the Legends of the Dark Knight stuff (which don't seem very important, except for Venom, which is very important for Knightfall), Man Who Laughs and Killing Joke, The Long Halloween Saga, Second Chances, and Death in the Family. I've also gone back to look at some Golden Age Batman stuff which I'd summarize as pleasingly pulpy, at least until Robin comes into play. I also have read the Neal Adams works from the late 60s and early 70s to see where modern Batman artwork developed. So that's my background coming into Knightfall. Most reviewers for these older comics seem to have read the originals and can scrutinize coloring, talk about what it was like reading it as a teenager, etc -- nope, I'm reading this first time as a working adult. This is a very well-coordinated story where each issue, while still mostly episodic, has three general themes:1. Bane's strategy for what will obviously be a future confrontation with Batman2. Batman's increasing weariness3. Robin grooming Jean-Paul to be a Batman replacementTake these things to their conclusion and by the end of the volume you can't help but conclude that soon Batman's going to be at the bottom of the barrel and have to face Bane in this state with Jean-Paul picking up the reins of Batman afterwards. Man, you can't help but feel bad for our hero being so heavily worn down: this volume is one of increasing darkness. The artwork is passable, not spectacular and not lackluster: it gets the job done.I wish though that for this 25th anniversary edition there'd be a more critical apparatus, like at least an extended introduction. At the end there's just a few concept sketches of Bane. I don't see any reason why someone who already has this material would want to splurge on these 25th anniversary editions.I opted for these rather than the omnibuses just because it's easier to read paperback comics, both in terms of handling the material (like literally bending the cover) and just because there's only about 350 pages here, which is very manageable. A cool feature is that the spine of this volume has partial artwork which slowly fills out as you collect the other 8, which is always something I like.So in all I'm enjoying the Knightfall series. Though again I feel that a 25th edition of the material is an event big enough to warrant more introductory/background material, so for that I'm docking a star. But it's great to be able to collect all this material now in a complete and affordable way. So glad that DC is finally releasing Knightfall in it's entirety. When I was in high school ten years ago I bough the original three trades they released for this story, which omitted a ton of material. All but one of the issues in this book were not included in those old trades, so this was all new to me. It was really cool to see how much time was spend laying the groundwork for Knightfall proper. The glossy paper quality is also a major improvement over the old releases. Definitely recommend!
