I hesitated to read this book at first; I'd found the author through her Jon's Mysteries series and was worried it wouldn't be as good since I could tell it was a completely different type of story--which it is, and yet isn't at the same time. Set in a medieval fantasy world, this is a M/M romance between two generals. While the story is drastically different from her Mysteries, it matches those books tonally. If you, like me, have enjoyed the Mysteries but hesitate to give this book a try: get over it! If you're new to the author and are looking for a light-hearted book with main characters you actually like (no bullying alpha males here!), then I recommend any book by AJ Sherwood. Ren and Arman are generals from different allied countries who became close friends in the last war. At the end of the war, Ren is cashiered out of his country's impoverished military. Having no job opportunities, he accepted Arman's invitation to come back to Aart. Five years later, he is working for the royal family, but in political and physical danger from unknown enemies. Arman returns from a long deployment, ready to acknowledge to himself and Ren that his love is more than just friendship. They and their friends must uncover the conspiracy to save themselves and the prince and his fiancee.The main characters are well written and likeable, and the side characters are fun. I enjoyed the story, and very much hope for the next book soon. I had read this author's contemporary psychic mystery series, and wasn't sure about trying such a wildly different book, but I was pleasantly impressed.
